Additional Notes for John Keefuss
Database Note No: 97
This is an abbreviated version of a much longer story: Mary Ann "Polly" Hazelip married John Keefuss in 1861. Keefuss then left to join the Union Army and served under General Buell. In 1862, Keefuss obtained leave to return to Edmonson Co. to see his wife and child, Little Johnnie. When he came into town, Ransom C. Hazelip, who was Mary's brother and John's brother-in-law, ordered John to help guard the Green River ferry crossing in Brownsville. John refused to do so, apparently arguing that he was on leave to see his wife and his son. During the argument, Ransom shot and killed John.

From the way I have heard this story told, it would seem that John never laid eyes on his son, Little Johnnie.

Both John and Little Johnnie are buried in the Luttrell Cemetery in Edmonson Co., KY.
