MARRIAGE NOTES: Information concerning this marriage was obtained from the Edmonson Co., KY, Genweb Marriage Index. A private researcher share his hypothesis with me that Henrietta and Parrum must have divorced sometime before 1854. The most significant evidence of this possibility is that a Henrietta James born in or about 1832 continues to show up on the US Census reports until 1910, even though Parrum is seen in an Edmonson Co., KY, marriage record as having married Malina Richardson in 1854. The fact of Henrietta's continued existence after Parrum's remarriage seems to indicate that Parrum and Henrietta divorced.

UPDATE: I have confirmed that Parrum and Henrietta were divorced, and I have seen the court order restoring Parrum to the rights and privileges of an unmarried man. Long story short, Henrietta was charged with having committed adultery with one of Parrum's unnamed brothers. (It was even referred to as a "habit of going to bed with one of his brothers." Yeah, 1854. And we thought this sort of thing only happened these days.)

Apparently, the Hazelip brothers did not always fare so well in marriage. In court records relating to the divorce of Parrum Hazelip and Henrietta James, Henrietta was charged with having the "habit" of going to bed with one of Parrum's brothers. In a different case, Lewis Hazelip was married to Margaret James, and, in their divorce suit, Margaret was charged with sleeping with one of Lewis Hazelip's brothers. In both instances, the offending brother remains unnamed, leaving us all to wonder if it was the same one. With a brother like that, who needs an enemy?

In a different case, a Robert Hazelip married Nancy Jolly. After they had been married a short while, Nancy became pregnant. Only a few months after that (and before Nancy gave birth), Robert left Edmonson County for parts unknown, leaving Nancy "destitute" and relying on the "charity of the county."
