Detailed Primary Information for Emily Jane Whobrey
Gender: Female
Generation: K
Added: 1 Jan 2009

Living: False
Primary Notes: The Birth Certificate for her daughter, Elasta Jane, states that her name was "Ema Whoberry."

Emily dipped snuff tobacco and many folks remember that she often had a line of brown saliva running down her face.

Oral history states that Emily also smoked a pipe and wore heavy shoes or boots with her dresses; that she was very much like "Mammy Yokum" from L'il Abner; and "would have a circle saw" if given the chance. (See Oral History Note 1.)

She would also urinate right out in the open by merely spreading her feet and lifting her dress out in front. Several people have recounted to me that they actually saw her do this in broad daylight.

Additional Notes for Emily Jane Whobrey
Database Note No: 153
In Norman Whobrey's pension application, where he is listing his children, there is a statement that says, "The dates not given of birth and deaths above our house and record were all blown away by cyclone in 1902."

There is also a cryptic note that says, "We have forgotten children by second wife." Norman appears to have only been married twice. The first wife was Malinda Deweese and the second was Emer Daffron. The odd thing about this statement is that Esley, Bessie, Grace, Phlemon, Thurman, and May appear to have been the children of Emer Daffron, his second wife.
Database Note No: 62
Here is some information concerning Emily Jane Whobrey's name. (She is often referred to as Emmy.)

Emily's father was Norman "Gaily" Whobrey. The 1920 Census shows his wife as “Emma” and her age as 49. I believe that the person shown in this census is, in fact, Emer Daffron Whobrey, Gaily’s second wife.

Roy Gravil indicated that his great grandmother (Emer Daffron) sometimes had to deal with some confusion because she was called “Emma” while having a step-daughter named “Emma.” (Oral History Note 17.) The step-daughter would have been Emily Jane Whobrey Armes Vincent, who was also commonly called “Emma.”

The age of the “Emma” in the census would put her birth date in 1871 or 1872. Emily Jane Whobrey Armes Vincent was born in 1871, and Emer Daffron Whobrey Vincent was born in 1872. These two birth years are so close they cannot be dispositive.

Finally, the census shows “May” Whobrey as the child of Gaily and “Emma” (or, really, Emer) and lists her age as eight years old. Mae Whobrey was the grandmother of Roy Gravil, and Roy stated that his great grandfather (Gaily) was 69 when Mae Whobrey was born. If that is the case, then this would fit nicely, because there is a 69-year difference between the ages of Gaily and Mae, as shown on the census (i.e., he is shown as being 77 years old and May is shown as being 8 years old). (Oral History Note 18.)
Database Note No: 2
Emma’s first name must have been “Emily Jane”:

When Emily's father, Norman Argalus Whobrey, applied to the US Department of the Interior, Bureau of Pensions, for a pension for his Civil War service, he listed his oldest child as “Emly Jane” with a birth year of 1872. (I need to obtain a copy of this document.) Emma’s Tombstone lists her birth year as 1871.

The 1900 US Census shows a Silas Berle Armes (age 52) and his wife “Emily J” with a birth year of 1870, living in Edmonson County, Kentucky. Although the Census shows that Silas Berle Armes had nine children, “Emily” is shown to have only three children, of which all three were living. The three youngest children shown on the Census are Dessie E, Estille E, and Shelton, which are three of the four children attributed to Emma’s first marriage.

We know that Meredith York Vincent’s first wife, Martha Ellen Vanmeter Vincent, died in 1903, and that Meredith and Emma married on December 31, 1904.

We also know that the children from Emma’s marriage to Silas Berle Armes resulted in four children: Dessie, Estil, Sheldon, Zelma.

So, piecing all this together, it would make a great deal of sense that the “Emily J” in the Census and the “Emly Jane” in Norman’s pension appllication would be Emma.

Silas Berle Armes, then, would have died after June 20, 1900, and before December 31, 1904, and Zelma would have been born after 1900 and before 1904.

Tim,

My name is UNDISCLOSED. My great-grandfather is Estil E. Armes. He was born Mar 1896 in Sunfish, Edmonson Co., KY. The date is according to the 1900 Census. He always celebrated his birthday on 24 Dec. He died 10 Jan 1979 at home in Clarksville, Clark Co., IN of cancer. He married Pearl Esther Rich on 22 Sep 1920 in KY (maybe Louisville).

They had 2 natural and 1 adopted children:

1. Charles Estil Armes born 5 Oct 1921 in Bee Spring, Edmonson Co., KY and died 29 May 1979 at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville, Clark Co., IN. He married Robena Elva McKay on 11 Oct 1941 at the First Church of God in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY. She was born 14 Jul 1920 in Brooksburg, Jefferson Co., IN and died in Tucson, Pima Co., AZ.

2. Virginia Armes born 3 May 1923 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY and died 19 Oct 1987 in Clarksville, Clark Co., IN. She married Sanders Clyde Scroggins on 1 Jun 1940 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY. He was born 21 Mar 1922 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY and died in Clarksville, Clark Co., IN.

All of the above are buried in Evergreen Cemetery in one section with one headstone.

3. [THIS SECTION UNDISCLOSED]. I will have to her permission to share any info about her.

Emily Whobrey is my great-great-grandmother. Thank you for posting your information. I had no idea that Gayley was a nickname for her father.

Roy Gravil of Edmonson Co., KY, wrote the following to me in an email received on July 22, 2008:

One of the records I have from my great grandfather to the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Pensions lists all of his children up to 1897 with their years of birth. According to the document they are as follows:

Emly Jane 1872

F.M. 1875

Lora B. 1877

Emity 1878 (her death record here lists her name as Mittie Whobrey Turner and her date of birth as July 25, 1881. She was the last surviving child of Lindy and she died March 19, 1968.)

Magnola (perhaps should be Magnolia) 1880

Mary or Marion middle name listed, but can't make it out. This could be my grandmother's half brother, Marion) 1882

Crit 1883

Charles 1887

Brewer A. 1891

Esley 1893 (this is Elsie's father and his correct date of birth was Nov. 25, 1892 and died Oct. 16, 1977)

Oren 1897.

The document also lists your great great grandmother as Lindy J. Deweese (Deweese having an "e" at the end as the Deweese's here spell it today). My grandmother, Mae Whobrey Gravil was born Nov. 8, 1911 and died June13, 1997. There was also Phlemon Whobrey who was born April 14, 1908 and I can't find his date of death. All of the children born after Brewer were the children of Emer Daffron Whobrey, my great grandfather's second wife. All of the children up to Brewer were the children of Malinda (Lindy). My grandmother also had a sister named Gracie who drowned as a child. I don't have her dates of birth and death, but Elsie says that they are available. We do know that she was a child of Emer and was probably born between Phlemon and my grandmother, Mae.

Grey Vincent suggested that John Walter, Silas's brother, hit Silas so hard on the head with a fireplace poker that the poker actually bent. Silas's step-mother, Emily Whobrey, suggested that that incident may have caused Silas's apparent mental troubles.

Emily's first husband, Silas Berle Armes, brought six children into his marriage with Emma:

-John M. Armes (ABT 1883 – UNK)
-Edward L. Armes (ABT 1885 – UNK)
-Lulu D. Armes (ABT 1887 – UNK)
-Benjamin H. Armes (ABT 1890 – UNK)
-Ova C. Armes (ABT 1891 – UNK)
-Ada M. Armes (ABT 1893 – UNK)

After Silas died, Emmy was forced to place her four children in an orphanage because she did not have sufficient means to raise them. (Oral History Note 16.) It would follow, then, that Silas’s original six children would also have been placed in an orphanage or in some form of foster or adoptive care. Although none of Silas’s children with his first wife (who must have passed away in 1893 or 1894) are my blood relatives, it does seem strange that there was entirely different group of children who were related to me, at least by household if not by blood. Perhaps the tragedy of having to place the children in an orphanage after Silas’s death and the tendency of such arrangements to scatter families to the four corners of the earth made the point too sad to bring up or discuss, so their existence consequently failed to make it into our family legend.

Emily's second husband, Meredith York Vincent, brought nine children to the family (although Tilmond Vincent died as a baby well before they were married), in addition to those Emily had from an earlier marriage and those she and Meredith had together. Between Emily and Meredith, there were 17 children. Meredith's children from his first marriage were:

-Rose Vincent French (1880 – 1918)
-Mary Pearl Vincent Penner (1884 – 1955)
-Robert Lee Vincent (1887 – 1968)
-Adalene Vincent Vanmeter (1889 – 1917)
-Silas Vincent (1889 – 1961)
-John Walter Vincent (1893 – 1952)
-Tilmond Vincent (1896 - 1896)
-Tilford Vincent (1897 – 1967)
-Victor Vincent (1901 – 1927)

The person shown as Ova (or maybe Ora) Vincent would seem to be my grandmother Bonnie Lillian Vincent. I've never heard of anyone in that family named Ova or Ora, and, of course, Bonnie is not listed (even though should would have been five years old at the time of this census).
